What personal development/certifications should HR professionals (new managers) take advantage of?

I offer online certificate programs that are useful to HR professionals.  In addition to my certificate – the online programs are approved for CE for HRCI and SHRM and some for the CA and FL Bar for CLE.

The first is a ~10 hour certificate program in Humanistic Conflict Management

The hardest part of management is dealing with the interpersonal problems that arise. This program will teach you how to effectively, ethically and compassionately deal with conflict while still being professional.

Upon completion you will receive a certificate in Humanistic Conflict Management and may refer to yourself as a humanistic conflict management professional

The next is an 8 hour Certificate Program in Applied Humanistic Leadership

Continuing Education Opportunities

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” Mahatma Gandhi

I started my company Humanist Learning Systems (https://humanistlearning.com/) to provide personal and professional online education in humanism and to provide science based solutions and self-help. The motto of my company is:

Think Better – Have better relationships – Feel more fulfilled

Learning how to think better by using applied science and critical thinking skills is essential to making better decisions. Having better relationships by actually being compassionate with the people you meet and work with is not only emotionally satisfying, it really does help you improve your interpersonal relationships. And finally, feel more fulfilled by not only being the good compassionate person you want to be, but by actively living your ethics, through – better decision making.

The hardest part about teaching people how to live their lives better and how to be more effective in the work is convincing people that there is something they need to learn.  One of the things I teach is how to get bullies to stop. Seriously – I can teach this. It’s a science based approach, and yes, it really works.  (see: https://humanistlearning.com/category/bullyingharassment/) This is knowledge that can change people’s lives. But to teach it to you, I first have to convince you, you need to learn it.

Learning can be fun. Especially if you get credit for it!
To help motivate people (ie you) to learn, I offer continuing education courses.

In short, if you are in need of continuing education credits and would like to try a convenient online training option – check out Humanist Learning Systems. Who knows, you may just learn something you didn’t even know you needed to know.

Is Unconscious Bias Training Worth It?

Unconscious bias training is currently all the rage, and for good reason. Discrimination is still a problem. But that doesn’t mean that training will help you overcome your unconscious biases.

Neuropsychologist Sylvana Storey wrote a wonderful piece explaining what the problem is: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sylvana-storey/unconscious-bias-making-m_b_8771258.html

It's an interesting essay and worth clicking through to read. She is right, a training isn't enough. The problem of power within an organization and resistance to change also has to be dealt with. Her example of how some people respond negatively to unconscious bias training was amusing because she seems to be unaware that entrenchment occurs whenever behavioral extinction is attempted. So of course, some people will respond negatively. That just means what they learned, they didn't like. It doesn't mean the training was ineffective.
