Obviously what Assad did was bad. But the question is: What would work to make him stop? Can we make him stop? We have to weigh to cost of inaction against the cost of action and against the potential benefits vs downsides of any given course of action. I don't know that there is a good solution to this. But that is morality. Sometimes you have to chose the greater of two goods or the lesser of two evils. This is one of those lesser of two evils situations.
